A woman died after being trapped inside a massive house fire in Georgetown Saturday night, Fire Chief Matt McKay reported Sunday morning.

Georgetown firefighters responded to a report of a large house fire at 238 East Main St. just before 11 p.m. Saturday night, the department said.

On the scene, firefighters found “heavy flames shooting about 20 feet high from the roof of the 2.5-story wood-frame, single-family home,” Georgetown Fire said.

Three residents had evacuated safely from the home, the department said. One woman was still inside.

Responders entered the home and found the woman on the second floor, suffering from “serious injuries,” the release said. Firefighters took her through a second-floor window and down a ladder.

The victim was taken in an ambulance to Anna Jaques Hospital in Newburyport. The woman was later pronounced dead, the department reported Sunday.

The victim’s identity has not yet been released.

Responders escalated the fire to a second alarm before 11 p.m., bringing in more teams from surrounding communities, the department said. The fire kept spreading “rapidly” and the third and fourth alarms were quickly struck.

Crews brought the blaze under control around 12:45 a.m. Sunday, according to officials. Firefighters remained overhauling the scene until after 1 a.m.

The house was determined a “total loss,” the department said, and the residents have been displaced. The American Red Cross responded to the scene early Sunday.

East Main Street remained closed in both directions for several hours through the night during the fire.

Georgetown Fire, along with the State Police Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit of the State Fire Marshal’s Office, are currently investigating the cause of the fire. The department stated more information will be released as it becomes available.
